Winter offers a lot of fun activities, from skating at the Westpost Outdoor rink to having an all-out, no-holds-barred snowball fight in the park. With all that fun, it’s important not to let hearing aid care fall by the wayside. Let’s take a look at a few tips to help protect your precious devices from damage this chilly season.
Avoid Long-Term Cold Weather Exposure

Leaving your devices in a car, near a window or in another unheated space can drain their batteries faster and stress their internal components. When you’re not wearing your devices, store them indoors at room temperature.
Don’t Skip Daily Care
Winter has more dirt and grime than you might initially expect. Whether your hearing aids are collecting moisture when you move from the chilly outdoors to the warm inside, or the dry air causes your skin to get irritated and shed slightly, a lot of debris can accumulate on your devices.
Create a nightly routine to gently wipe your hearing aids with a dry cloth and use a small brush or wax tool to remove wax buildup and other debris.
Manage Daily Moisture
Snow, slush and condensation are common winter hazards for hearing aids. If your hearing aids get damp, remove them as soon as possible and dry them gently. You can use a drying case or hearing aid dehumidifier overnight if you spent the day playing in the snow.
Secure Your Devices
If you’re about to make snow angels, build a snowman, go sledding or have a snowball fight, make sure your devices are secure. You can attach them to a lanyard with special clips or secure them to your head using a wide headband. If you lose your devices, stop what you’re doing immediately and carefully scan the area for them to avoid accidental damage.
Schedule a Seasonal Checkup
During a seasonal checkup, we’ll deep clean your devices, inspect their batteries and ensure the programming perfectly suits your needs. Contact us at ENT Specialists Of Northern Virginia today to schedule your service & repair appointment with one of our specialists.
